Spring Break - Part 1

This will be the first of a few posts about Spring Break and all we got accomplished on the house.

1. The family room - aka the ugly dreaded wood paneling

Chris has this sanded before I gor down there Friday.

See it looked lighter in the room just by sanding it. We decided to save on time and not worry about trying to cover the lines in the paneling. I know that you can putty them before painting, but it is a huge room and I didn't want to take the time to do that.

Next we put primer on the wall.

Finally we painting the room. We chose a neutral color in earth tones to complement the fire place.

Too bad, I forgot to take a picture of the color next to the fireplace. I'll put it on my list for next time I go home.  But trust me, it looks so nice. The room is way brighter and I am really glad that we chose to not keep the paneling.

2. Kitchen - wallpaper nightmare

We had a terrible time getting rid of the pineapple wall paper. It was more awful than I could imagine. The top layer of rooster wall paper came off pretty easy. But the rest was a nightmare.

Seriously, who picks this? I guess it  had been on there a while and none of the wall paper removal solutions worked. We spent several evenings and two fulls days picking the paper off in small strips at a time. Only to find out yesterday that Chris can just mud over it. What a waste of time!! Too bad no one told us that before. So this week, after work, Chris will be mudding, placing texture and painting the kitchen. Gosh, I do love him for being so dedicated to that house.

The rest of the kitchen is completely gutted and has a giant hole in the floor (which is currently covered by a board so my neice wouldn't fall through)

This whole is under the sink.

This whole is at the other end of the kitchen where there was water damage under the hot water heater and the downstairs bath.

Looks like a nightmare huh? The house is supposed to be done in about 3 weeks. I'll be anxious to see if that really happens.

I need to get back to some reading, but I will post more later.
